The Tour
If you have the spirit of an explorer
within, then you will really enjoy
the experience of visiting one of the great geological wonders of the
world The Great Stalactite, at The Doolin Cave.
The owners of the cave are keen cavers and share a respect for nature.
Tours
of the cave are run on an eco friendly basis, with as little impact as
possible on the natural environment either above or below ground.
What this means in practical terms, is that artificial lighting is
kept to a
minimum, so visitors will be issued with a helmet for protection. Let the adventure begin!
Visitors start their journey at Bruach na hAille restaurant, Doolin
where they board a mini-bus which takes them the short distance to
Doolin Cave ,where they are met by a guide.
First stop is the old stream sink at the original entrance, visitors then
proceed to the shaft entrance where they will each be supplied with a
helmet, cap and lamp. They will then proceed down the stairs, through
the
tunnel, and follow the walkway above the stream.
When visitors enter the Main Chamber, theywill briefly experience total darkness before the lights are switched on. When the display is
finished the electric light is switched off and visitors will once
again use
their cap-lamps to illuminate the way through a short section of
excavated
passage to the Second Chamber where they will view the stream and
other
features of interest.
From there they will descend steps into the Main Chamber at ground
level and
take their place on a platform which provides another spectacular view
of
the Great Stalactite, together with the important sediment sequence.
They
will then return to the cave entrance.
The cave tour will take approx. thirty minutes and it is envisaged
that the
whole trip will take one hour.
Visitors will be returned to the pick-up point at Bruach na hAille
restaurant where they can enjoy a meal or refreshments or browse
through the
mementos (keepsakes?) at the Loft Craftshop located on the first floor
above
Bruach na hAille. |
